Amazing what triggers memories…

I must’ve been 10-years-old.

My granddad rented part of a field he had, on a road, to a driving range/mini golf and batting cage. It might not be much, but at that time, it was a small town in northern Arkansas so it was one of the few things in town for younger kids to do. The owners were always extra nice to me given who their landlord was…

There was a girl once, I think she was there with a date, or a family group, but all I really remember about her was a long brown braid on her head and the gladiator sandals on her feet.

I thought those shoes were the coolest thing I’d ever seen.

Keep in mind I’d only ever seen them in the movie cinema.

They were a sign of strength…badassdom.

Thirty years, two rounds of cancer and a gastric bypass later I found a pair in my size, that fit my calves.

Badassdom.
