So in the initial scene we’ll see George Fairchild, an aging man, welcoming Joe, Harvey and Britta to his bedside or his dinner table….I haven’t decided which…..and the show will take place in flashbacks maybe.
It might simplify the staging to have the scenes take place behind and above them. Britta and Joe are two of the six back stories that James Michener wove into the tapestry that is The Drifters. They are two where George did not play a large part. They met him around the same time the others did, when they all came together at Torremolinos at the run down bar called The Alamo.
He introduced the group to Harvey later, in Pamplona, and Britta decided he would be hers and frankly, Harvey figured it might be fun and when he got tired of it he’d buy her a bar in Torremolinos and say goodbye to the beautiful Norwegian girl. But he never tired of her…..silly man. And Harvey took a personal liking to Joe as well, and would’ve opted to follow his progress in life. So it makes sense they’d be together.
Thinking about where the other surviving Drifters might be…..Gretchen is either a prominent academic or progressive politician a la AOC. Cato is maybe a famous Black Muslim radical speaker riding the Black Lives Matter thing. Yigal is a Nobel Prize winner for some science….
Now…is it a reunion dinner, or is George dying?
